Type 1 Diabetes

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. This condition typically develops in childhood or adolescence but can occur at any age. Individuals with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy and careful monitoring of blood glucose levels.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

- Increased thirst and frequent urination

- Extreme hunger

- Unintentional weight loss

- Fatigue or weakness

- Blurred vision

- Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Type 1 Diabetes

In TCM, type 1 diabetes (known as "Xiao Ke") is often attributed to deficiencies in the spleen and kidney Yin, leading to heat and dryness in the body. TCM focuses on nourishing Yin, clearing heat, and supporting overall metabolic function.

TCM Diagnosis and Approaches:

- Kidney Yin Deficiency: Insufficient kidney yin can lead to dryness and heat, causing symptoms associated with diabetes.

- Herbs: Formulas like Sheng Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) are used to nourish Yin, clear heat, and promote overall health. Key ingredients include Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark), and Bai Shao (White Peony Root)*.

- Spleen Qi Deficiency: Weakness in the spleen can contribute to digestive issues and overall metabolic imbalances.

- Acupuncture: Points like Spleen 6 (San Yin Jiao), Ren 12 (Zhong Wan), and Stomach 36 (Zu San Li) can help strengthen the spleen and promote digestive health.

- Heat Accumulation: Excess heat in the body can lead to increased thirst and frequent urination.

- Moxibustion Therapy: Moxibustion can be used to warm and strengthen the body’s overall function.

Lifestyle Recommendations

- Dietary Management: Following a balanced diet that is low in sugar and refined carbohydrates can help manage blood sugar levels. TCM recommends including foods that nourish the spleen, such as whole grains and vegetables.

- Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall health.
