What is Tui Na?

Understanding Tui Na

tui na Chinese massage

Tui Na (pronounced "twee nah") translates to "push and grasp" and is a therapeutic form of massage that involves rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, also known as meridians, as well as a variety of manipulative techniques. It aims to balance the body's vital energy, or Qi, and remove blockages that can cause discomfort and illness. This can include swelling, back pain, or water retention. Practitioners use their fingers, hands, elbows, and sometimes their feet to apply pressure, knead, and stretch the muscles.

The origins of Tui Na date back thousands of years, deeply rooted in the philosophies of TCM that view health as a balance between yin and yang and the harmonious flow of qi. Ancient Chinese medical texts, such as the "Huangdi Neijing" (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), detail early forms of massage therapy used to treat various ailments and improve overall well-being. Over centuries, Tui Na evolved, integrating techniques from martial arts and other healing practices, to become a cornerstone of TCM.

How Tui Na is Performed

A typical Tui Na session begins with a detailed consultation where the practitioner assesses the patient’s condition and identifies any imbalances in qi. The therapy itself involves a series of rhythmic, dynamic movements, tailored to address specific health issues. Techniques include pressing, tapping, rolling, and rubbing, each targeting different layers of the body and varying depths of pressure. Sessions can last from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the patient’s needs. Tui Na is also a recommended prenatal massage. For pregnant women, Tui Na is performed a bit differently.
