PCOS is a common disorder where women have irregular or no ovulation and/or menstruation and their ovaries contain immature eggs. This painful and emotionally frustrating disorder, which affects families attempting to have children, affects up to 10% of all women in the United States. Generally, PCOS causes women to have low energy, extra body and facial hair, overweight, and high insulin and blood sugar. Elevation of the hormone, testosterone, is the main cause of many of these symptoms.

The Study:

Broken into 3 groups of women diagnosed with PCOS. All groups where informed on the importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet.

1st Group: Received Acupuncture with manual and low frequency electrical stimulation

2nd Group: Instructed to exercise at least 3 x per week.

3rd Group: Control

The Results:

Professor Elisabet Stener-Victorin, stated that "the study shows that both Acupuncture and exercise reduce high levels of testosterone and lead to more regular menstruation..." "of the two treatments, the Acupuncture proved more effective."

Both the Acupuncture and the exercise group noticed improvements in weight loss, testosterone levels, acne, and menstrual regularity.
